Corgi Name Trends
It’s pretty clear that the corgi’s quizzical-yet-cute demeanor is inspiring the names chosen for them. In our list of top corgi names, you’ll find lots of gentlemanly choices like Winston, Watson, Baxter, and Bentley, all of which bring a British aristocrat to mind. Corgis are also given the name Einstein much more frequently than any other dog breed! Diminutive “Ein” is also popular for these floofers, thanks to the eponymous character in the anime series Cowboy Bebop.
For corgis, we also see a big influx of friendy, spritely names like Molly, Daisy, Sadie, and Toby—classic dog name picks that just seem to fit a corgi’s smiling face.
Other popular corgi names reference their oft-reddish coloring, including Penny, Ginger, and Rosie.
Corgi Name Advice
If you’re having trouble deciding, keep in mind that great corgi names are those that speak to YOU. For example, your puppy might sport the name of your favorite brunch food (Waffles, anyone?) or a locale you love, like London.
Another consideration when choosing your corgi name? Dog training. This is of particular importance for puppies. When teaching your new dog to respond to cues like sit, stay, or come, be sure their name isn’t a source of confusion. In other words, avoid names that sound like a common dog training command, such as “Bit,” which could easily be misheard as “sit.” In general, two-syllable names and longer are easier for dogs to understand—though we can understand if you don’t want to be calling out “Colonel Cutie Pie” or “Josephina Wilhelmina” at the dog park!
Of course, what matters most is that the dog name you choose makes you happy. The best corgi names will make you feel good when you say them.
We’re fans of the “back door test” for dog name selection. It’s pretty much what it sounds like: stand at the back door and call out your new dog‘s potential name. Saying “Butters, it’s time for dinner!” or “Charlie, leave it!” helps take the name out of the ether and into real life.
